O’Neill, Lord (1914-1990), Baron O’Neill of the Maine, was prime minister of Northern Ireland (a region of the United Kingdom) from 1963 to 1969. He resigned after his party refused to support conciliation with Northern Ireland’s Roman Catholic minority. Terence Marne O’Neill was born on Sept. 10, 1914, in London, and educated at Eton College. From 1939 to 1945, he served with the Irish Guards and became a captain. In 1946, he was elected member of Parliament for Bannside, in Antrim. In 1956, he became minister for home affairs. From 1956 to 1963, he was minister of finance. He died on June 12, 1990.
