Pilbara is a region in the northwest of Australia. It extends from Onslow and Port Hedland along the northwest coast to the Northern Territory border in the east. Iron ore deposits are developed on a large scale in the region, which has some of the richest mineral deposits in the world. Pilbara contains at least 26 billion tons (24,000 million metric tons) of high-grade ore. Factories there make pellets of iron ore dust. Saltworks in the Pilbara region recover large quantities of salt from the sea.
