Ponsford, Bill

Ponsford, Bill (1900-1991), an Australian cricketer, was one of Australia’s most successful opening batsmen. In four successive innings in 1926 and 1927, he made 437, 202, 38, and 336 runs—a combined total of 1,013 runs. Between 1924 and 1934, he played 29 Test matches for Australia and scored 2,122 runs at an average of 48.22 runs per innings. His highest Test score was 266 runs, against England at the Oval in 1934. Playing for Victoria, he scored 429 runs against Tasmania in 1923 and 437 runs against Queensland in 1927. William Harold Ponsford was born on Oct. 19, 1900, at North Fitzroy in Victoria, Australia.
