Powys (pop. 133,169) is a local government area in Wales. It is a unitary authority, the primary form of local government in the United Kingdom. Powys is in central Wales, along the border with England. It occupies about a fourth of the area of Wales. Much of the Powys region is mountainous moorland. Most of its people depend on agriculture or tourism for their living.

Powys strongly retains the Welsh tradition of the eisteddfod, a competitive meeting for artistic activities such as singing and dancing. The Brecon Beacons National Park, one of Wales’s greatest tourist attractions, is in Powys.
