Prescott, John

Prescott, John (1938-…), served as deputy prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007. From 1997 to 2001, Prescott held the additional post of secretary of state for transport, the environment, and the regions. He was deputy leader of the Labour Party from 1994 until 2007.

Prescott was born on May 31, 1938, in Prestatyn, Wales. He was educated at Ruskin College, Oxford University, and at Hull University. For many years, he was a steward in the merchant navy and an official of the National Union of Seamen. He represented Hull East in Parliament from 1970 to 2010. He became a life peer, with the title Baron Prescott, in July 2010.
