Procter, Michael John (1946-2024), was an outstanding South African cricket player and one of the finest all-rounders of his time. Procter could not play Test cricket for most of his career because the apartheid (racial segregation) regime in South Africa resulted in a ban on South African teams in international competition. Procter was a fast bowler and an outstanding batsman.
Procter was born on Sept. 15, 1946, in Durban, South Africa. In England, he played county cricket for Gloucestershire, captaining them from 1977 to 1981. On his retirement in 1989, Procter had scored over 21,000 first-class runs and taken more than 1,400 wickets. After retirement, he coached South Africa’s cricket team when they returned to international competition. Procter died on Feb. 17, 2024.
