Rainbow Warrior is the name of a vessel owned by Greenpeace, an international environmental organization, for use in antinuclear protest voyages. On July 10, 1985, two explosions tore open the hull of the original Rainbow Warrior while it was docked at Auckland, New Zealand. A photographer on board at the time of the explosion was killed. On July 23, a man and a woman, both French army officers, were arrested on charges relating to the explosion and sinking of the vessel. In 1986, the French government apologized and paid compensation. The two agents were then handed over to French military officials. Greenpeace built a new Rainbow Warrior to replace the original. The new ship launched on July 10, 1989.
