Ramsey, Sir Alfred

Ramsey, Sir Alfred (1920-1999), managed the England soccer team from 1963 to 1974, including the team that won the FIFA World Cup tournament in 1966. FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football). FIFA is soccer’s world governing body.

Alfred Ernest Ramsey was born on Jan. 22, 1920, in Dagenham, London . Ramsey was signed by Southampton as an amateur in 1943 and turned professional in 1944. In 1949, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur . Ramsey played for England 32 times. He was captain of the national team three times. Then, as manager of Ipswich Town from 1955 to 1963, he brought the club from the third division to the Football League championship. He was knighted in 1967. Ramsey died on April 28, 1999.
