Redgrave, Steven (1962-…), is a British oarsman. In 2000, he became the only British athlete to win gold medals at five successive Olympic Games. His first victory came with the coxed fours at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. In the Seoul Olympics of 1988, he won the coxless pairs with Andy Holmes, another British oarsman. Redgrave also won a bronze medal in the pairs with coxswain. By 1992, he had formed a partnership with the British oarsman Matthew Pinsent, and they won the coxless pairs title in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992. They repeated the feat in Atlanta in 1996, and Redgrave announced his retirement. But, six months later, he reversed his decision, and said he was aiming for an unprecedented fifth Olympic title in Sydney in 2000. Redgrave was a member of the United Kingdom team that won the gold medal in the heavyweight fours without coxswain event in Sydney.
Steven Geoffrey Redgrave was born on March 23, 1962, in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England. He took up rowing in 1976. Redgrave has won several world championships and Commonwealth championships. He wrote Steven Redgrave’s Complete Book of Rowing (1992). Redgrave was knighted in 2001.
