Register office, in the United Kingdom and other countries, is where records of births, marriages, and deaths are kept. The Registration of Births and Deaths Act of 1953 states that a birth must be registered within six weeks and a death within five days. Certificates are issued in connection with the registration of a birth, death, or marriage. In 1538, Thomas Cromwell, chief minister of King Henry VIII, decreed that the records be made weekly. The title of the keeper of these records was originally a register. But, in the 1800’s, the keeper came to be called a registrar.
