Robinson, Lennox

Robinson, Lennox (1886-1958), was an Irish dramatist, producer, and author. Robinson was a leading figure in the Irish literary revival during the early 1900’s. He was associated with the Abbey Theatre, the Irish national theater, from 1908 until his death. Robinson wrote 20 plays for the Abbey Theatre, beginning with The Clancy Name (1908) and including The Whiteheaded Boy (1916), The Lost Leader (1918), and Church Street (1934). He was most successful with comedies about Irish country life and serious dramas about Irish politics. Among Robinson’s other works are several books on the theatre, including The Irish Theatre (1939), An Appreciation of the Theatre (1945), and Ireland’s Abbey Theatre 1899-1951 (1951). He also edited The Golden Treasury of Irish Verse (1925) and co-edited The Oxford Book of Irish Verse (1958).

Esme Stuart Lennox Robinson was born on Oct. 4, 1886, in Douglas, Cork. He wrote an autobiography, Curtain Up (1942). Robinson died on Oct. 14, 1958.
