Roche, Stephen (1959-…), a former Irish cyclist, won the Tour de France race in 1987, perhaps the world’s most important cycling event. Roche placed third in the event in 1985. He also won the Tour of Italy in 1987. Roche was born on Nov. 28, 1959, in Dublin, and started his cycling career there. He worked as a central heating technician while cycling as an amateur rider. In 1979, Roche moved to France, where he turned professional in 1981. He retired from cycling in 1993.
