Schumacher, Michael

Schumacher, Michael (1969-…), was a champion German race-car driver. He drove Formula One cars, the most technologically advanced racing cars. Formula One drivers participate in Grand Prix races, where they compete to earn the most points in a year. In 2020, Lewis Hamilton tied Schumacher for the most career Formula One World Drivers’ Championships. Schumacher won the title in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004.

Schumacher made his Formula One racing debut as a member of the Jordan team in 1991, and then joined the Benetton team in 1992. Two years later, Schumacher beat the British driver Damon Hill by one point to win his first World Drivers’ Championship. The following year, he won 9 of 17 championship rounds, or Grand Prix, to retain the title. In 1996, Schumacher moved to the Ferrari team.

Schumacher was born on Jan. 3, 1969, in Hurth-Hermuhlheim, Germany. At the age of 15, he won the German Junior Karting Championships. Schumacher retired following the 2006 season. He returned to Formula One racing in 2009 and joined the Mercedes team in 2010. Schumacher retired from racing for the second time in 2012. In 2013, Schumacher suffered a severe brain injury while skiing.
