Sedgman, Frank

Sedgman, Frank (1927-…), was one of Australia’s finest tennis players. From 1949 to 1952, he played 28 times for Australia in Davis Cup matches and lost only three times. Australia won the cup in 1950, 1951, and 1952. Sedgman was ranked the number-one male player in the world in 1951 and 1952.

In 1951, Sedgman became the first Australian to win the United States Open singles title. In 1952, he won the U.S. Open and All-England (Wimbledon) singles titles. He won the Australian Open singles title in 1949 and 1950. Sedgman was also an outstanding doubles player. In 1951, he teamed with Australian Ken McGregor to win the grand slam in men’s doubles—the Australian Open, Wimbledon, French Open, and U.S. Open titles. In 1952, the team won three of the four grand slam doubles championships, losing only in the finals of the U.S. Open tournament. Sedgman also won the 1948 Wimbledon men’s doubles championship and the 1950 U.S. Open men’s doubles championship, both with Australian John Bromwich. Sedgman won the Australian mixed doubles championship with U.S. player Doris Hart in 1949 and 1950. The two won the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and French Open mixed doubles championships in 1951 and 1952. Francis Arthur Sedgman was born on Oct. 29, 1927, in Melbourne. He turned professional in 1953.

In 2019, Sedgman was made an Officer in the Order of Australia . The Order of Australia is Australia’s highest award for service to the country or to humanity.
