Sin, Jaime Lachica

Sin, Jaime Lachica (1928-2005), who served as Roman Catholic archbishop of Manila from 1974 to 2003, made a lasting contribution to the history of the Philippines. He encouraged people to take part in the revolution of February 1986, which toppled President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos and restored democracy to the Philippines. He also supported the mass protests that forced President Joseph Estrada to leave office in 2001.

Jaime Lachica Sin was born on Aug. 31, 1928, in New Washington, on the central Philippine island of Panay. He was ordained a priest in 1954. In 1967, he became a bishop. He served as archbishop of Iloilo before becoming archbishop of Manila in 1974. In 1976, Pope Paul VI appointed Sin to the Sacred College of Cardinals. Sin retired as archbishop of Manila in 2003. He died on June 21, 2005.
