Smith, Francis Graham

Smith, Francis Graham (1923-…), was the United Kingdom’s Astronomer Royal, the country’s principal astronomer, from 1982 to 1990. Smith was educated at Downing College of Cambridge University. He was professor of radio astronomy at Manchester University from 1964 to 1974. He served as director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1976 until 1981. In 1981, Smith became professor of radio astronomy at Manchester and director of Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories at Jodrell Bank. See also Astronomer royal .
