Solent is the channel off the south coast of England that separates the Isle of Wight from Hampshire. It is between 2 and 5 miles (3 and 8 kilometers) wide, and about 15 miles (24 kilometers) long. It extends from the western tip of the Isle of Wight to Spithead, the water that lies between the eastern tip and Portsmouth.
