South Tyneside (pop. 147,776) is a district in Tyne and Wear Metropolitan County, England. Other towns are Boldon, Hebburn, and Jarrow. The region’s traditional industries include heavy engineering, shipbuilding, coal mining, and steel production, but all declined in the late 1900’s. Today, service industries employ many people.
