Steel, Sir David (1938-…), led the Liberal Party in the United Kingdom from 1976 to 1988. He resigned after helping the party merge with the Social Democratic Party to form the Liberal Democratic Party. Steel had been Liberal chief whip from 1970 to 1975. He served in Parliament from 1965 to 1983 as a member for Roxburgh, Selkirk, and Peebles and from 1983 to 1997 as a member for Tweeddale, Ettrick, and Lauderdale.
David Martin Scott Steel was born in Scotland on March 31, 1938. He was educated in Kenya and at Edinburgh University, where he studied law. He became a broadcaster and journalist. Steel was knighted in 1990. He became the presiding officer of Scotland’s Parliament in 1997.
