Swift, Frank (1913-1958), was one of the greatest goalkeepers in British soccer history. He kept goal for the England and Manchester City teams. During his career, he played in 19 international soccer matches. In 1934, Swift won the FA (Football Association) Cup with Manchester City. Swift was the first goalkeeper in the 1900’s to captain an English national team. His great height, huge hands, and natural ability made him a formidable obstacle to opposing forwards. Swift was born on Dec. 25, 1913, in Blackpool . He was killed in an air crash in Munich , Germany , on Feb. 6, 1958, while traveling as a sportswriter with the Manchester United football (soccer) team.
