Timaru (pop. 46,296) is a district on the eastern coast of the South Island of New Zealand, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Christchurch. Industries include a brewery, flour mills, freezing works, fisheries, a tannery, and woolen mills. Caroline Bay, on which Timaru is situated, is a tourist resort. Whalers settled Timaru in 1837. Settlers arrived to take up land during the 1850’s.
