Todd, Sir Garfield

Todd, Sir Garfield (1908-2002), a New Zealand-born missionary, was prime minister of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) from 1953 to 1958. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, he was placed under house arrest for his opposition to Ian Smith’s unlawful government and for his advocacy of Black majority rule. From 1980 to 1986, he served as a member of the senate of Zimbabwe. He was knighted in 1986. Reginald Stephen Garfield Todd was born on July 13, 1908, in Invercargill, New Zealand. He died on Oct. 13, 2002.
