Tomkins, Thomas

Tomkins, Thomas (1572-1656), was a Welsh composer of madrigals and church music. His madrigals were published as Songs of 3, 4, 5, and 6 parts (1622). They include “Weep no more thou sorry boy,” “Music divine,” and “The fauns and Satyrs tripping.” He also wrote instrumental music, including more than 70 pieces for keyboard. Tomkins’s religious music includes five church services and about 120 anthems.

Tomkins was born into a large family of musicians in St. David’s, Dyfed, Wales. He was a pupil of the English composer William Byrd. Tomkins was organist of Worcester Cathedral, England, from 1596 to 1646.
