Tone, Theobald Wolfe

Tone, Theobald Wolfe (1763-1798), was an Irish soldier and patriot. He was one of the founders of the Society of United Irishmen, a revolutionary organization. Tone sought the help of France to free Ireland from British rule. During the Irish rebellion of 1798, he sailed with a fleet of French ships to invade Ireland and support the rebellion. The French troops landed and won their first battle, but they were soon overwhelmed by British forces. Tone was taken to Dublin and condemned to death by hanging. He died in his cell from a self-inflicted wound on Nov. 19, 1798.

Tone was born in Dublin on June 20, 1763. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1786 and became a lawyer in 1789.
