Torfaen (pop. 92,276) is a local government area in southeastern Wales. It is a unitary authority, the primary form of local government in the United Kingdom. Torfaen is administered from the town of Pontypool. Its other towns are Blaenavon and Cwmbran.
Once a center of the iron and steel industries, Torfaen now produces brakes, clothing, fiberglass, glass, jewelry, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. Steel still has some importance, and many people work in engineering firms. Forestry and farming are the chief rural economic activities.
