Trent, River, is the third longest river in England and the principal river of the Midlands. It rises on Biddulph Moor, in Staffordshire, and flows northeastward for about 170 miles (270 kilometers) through the counties of Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire. Towns along the course of the Trent include Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham, and Newark.
The Trent joins the River Ouse about 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of Hull, to form the River Humber. The Humber empties into the North Sea.
