Welcome Stranger is the name given to a nugget of gold discovered in Moliagul, Victoria, Australia, on Feb. 5, 1869. It is claimed to be the purest large nugget ever found. The nugget measured about 10 by 25 inches (25 by 63 centimeters). It weighed 2,280 ounces (70,920 grams), and it yielded 2,248 ounces (69,920 grams) of pure gold. John Deason and Richard Oates, two miners from Cornwall, England, discovered the Welcome Stranger.
