Wimmera is a rich agricultural district in western Victoria, Australia. The district is bounded by Lake Hindmarsh in the north, the Avoca River in the east, the Grampians and Ararat in the south, and the South Australian border in the west. The district covers more than 9,000 square miles (23,300 square kilometers). It reaches a height of 600 feet (183 meters) above sea level.
Farmers in the region grow mainly wheat. On the rolling plains, they raise sheep for wool. They also grow fruits and vegetables. Horsham is the main market and commercial center of the district. Other important towns include Nhill, Stawell, and Warracknabeal. Farms in the region receive irrigation from a system of pipelines, reservoirs, and artesian bores (deep, drilled wells) that also serves the Mallee district of South Australia.
