Windsor and Maidenhead (pop. 153,496) is a local government area in southern England. It became a unitary authority in 1998, with all local government powers within its boundaries. Previously, the area was a district in the county of Berkshire. The area is mainly residential and includes the historic towns of Windsor, Maidenhead, and Eton. Recreational facilities include the River Thames, Windsor Great Park, and a horse-racing track at Ascot. Windsor is dominated by Windsor Castle, which has been a royal residence since the A.D. 1000’s.
