Woolton, Lord

Woolton, Lord (1883-1964), was the food minister for the United Kingdom during World War II (1939-1945). He became minister in 1940 and introduced national standards for a loaf of bread, special wartime dining centers called British Restaurants, and school meals and milk. From 1943 to 1945, he was minister of reconstruction. In Conservative administrations after the war, he was lord president of the council and chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. From 1946 to 1955, he was Conservative Party chairman.

Frederick James Marquis Woolton was born on Aug. 24, 1883, in Manchester, England. He was knighted in 1935. He was made a baron in 1935, a viscount in 1953, and an earl in 1956. He died on Dec. 14, 1964.
