Wyangala Dam

Wyangala Dam stands on the Lachlan River, near the junction of the Lachlan and Abercrombie rivers in New South Wales, Australia. It is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the town of Cowra. The dam provides water for irrigation, livestock, and people. It is an earth-and-rock-fill-dam (see Dam (Embankment dams) ). The Wyangala Dam is 270 feet (82 meters) high and has a storage capacity of 1.6 billion cubic yards (1.22 billion cubic meters). The original dam was completed in 1935. It was enlarged and strengthened between 1961 and 1971. A hydroelectric power station operates downstream from the dam on the Lachlan River.
