Young Nick’s Head is a headland (cape) of white cliffs at the southern end of Poverty Bay in the North Island of New Zealand. It was the first land in New Zealand sighted on the first voyage of the British navigator James Cook. Cook promised a gallon (4.5 liters) of rum to the first person to see land. Nicholas Young, the surgeon’s boy, sighted the headland on Oct. 7, 1769. Cook called the headland Young Nick’s Head in his honor.
