Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, in Greeneville in northeastern Tennessee, includes the home, tailor shop, and burial place of the 17th president of the United States. Johnson, who was vice president under President Abraham Lincoln, became president in 1865 after Lincoln was assassinated. Johnson’s term ended in 1869.
Johnson settled in Greeneville in the 1820’s and made his living there as a tailor before entering politics. After leaving the presidency, he returned to live in Greeneville.
The historic site includes the home on Main Street that he owned from 1851 until his death in 1875, a replica of his birthplace, his tailor shop, and his grave in nearby Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. Johnson is buried there with his wife and other family members.
The site was authorized as a national monument in 1935. It was redesignated as a national historic site in 1963.
