Palmer, Jim

Palmer, Jim (1945-…), was the leading pitcher in the American League during the 1970’s. In that decade, Palmer led the league in victories three times and won at least 20 games eight times. He won the Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the league in 1973, 1975, and 1976. In 1966, Palmer became the youngest pitcher to throw a complete game shutout in the World Series.

Palmer signed with the Baltimore Orioles in 1963 and pitched his entire major league career for Baltimore, from 1965 to 1984. He overcame arm injuries in the late 1960’s to become one of baseball’s most durable pitchers. Palmer led the American League in innings pitched four times. He ended his career with 268 victories, including 53 shutouts.

James Alvin Palmer was born on Oct. 15, 1945, in New York City. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
