Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University

Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University is a public institution of higher education in Normal, Alabama. The Alabama Legislature founded it in 1875 as a teacher’s college called the Huntsville Normal School, in Huntsville, Alabama.

In 1891, the school moved a few miles away to its present location. It changed its name to State Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes and became a land-grant college. Land-grant colleges or universities exist in all 50 states and receive federal aid to support education. The college changed its name to Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1948 and became a university in 1969. Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, also known as Alabama A & M, is known for strong academic programs in teacher education.
