Appalachian State University is a public university in Boone, North Carolina. It was founded as Watauga Academy in 1899 and became a teacher training college called Appalachian State Normal School in 1925. Its name was changed to Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929. It gained university status and took its present name in 1967. Appalachian State is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the university’s athletic teams are called the Mountaineers.
