Armstrong State University was a public institution of higher learning in Savannah, Georgia. It was part of the University System of Georgia. It was founded as a two-year college, Armstrong Junior College, in 1935. In 1959, it was renamed Armstrong College of Savannah. It became a four-year institution as Armstrong State College in 1964. In 1996, the school achieved university status and was renamed Armstrong Atlantic State University. In 2014, it became Armstrong State University. The university’s athletic teams were called the Pirates. On Jan. 1, 2018, the university merged with Georgia Southern University and ceased to exist as a separate institution.
