Athabasca University

Athabasca University, << `ATH` uh BAS kuh, >> in Athabasca, Alberta, is Canada’s leading institution offering distance education—that is, providing learning opportunities to students regardless of their geographical location. Most Athabasca students study at home, working at their own pace. The university delivers courses to the students by a variety of means, including educational software, printed materials, the Internet, and telephone and e-mail links with tutors. The university also offers classroom courses, which it calls group study, at its main campus in Athabasca and at learning centers in Calgary and Edmonton.

Athabasca is an open university, one that accepts all adult students regardless of their prior academic experience. Any person 16 years of age or older living in Canada, the United States, or Mexico is eligible for admission. The provincial government of Alberta established Athabasca University in 1970. The first classes were held at the school in 1972.
