Augusta University is a public institution of higher education in Augusta, Georgia. The university traces its origins to the Academy of Richmond County, which was chartered in 1783 as a college-preparatory school for boys. It opened for classes in 1785. The school suspended classes during the American Civil War (1861-1865) but reopened in 1868. In 1925, the school became the Junior College of Augusta, the first junior college in Georgia, and women were admitted. In 1958, the junior college changed its name to Augusta College and joined the University System of Georgia. It became a four-year college in 1963 and added graduate programs in 1973. In 1996, Augusta College became Augusta State University. The university merged with Georgia Health Sciences University in 2012 and was renamed Georgia Regents University. It took its present name, Augusta University, in 2015. Augusta University sports teams are called the Jaguars.
