Barry University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Miami Shores, Florida. It was founded and is administered by the Adrian Dominican Order of Sisters, a Roman Catholic religious order of women. The institution was established in 1940 as Barry College for women, named in honor of Patrick Barry, the Catholic bishop of St. Augustine, Florida. The college began admitting men in 1975. It became Barry University in 1981. The university’s athletic teams are called the Buccaneers.
