Arcadia University

Arcadia University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Glenside, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. The university is independently controlled but maintains a historic relationship with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

The institution was established in 1853 as Beaver Female Seminary. Its name was changed to Beaver College and Musical Institute in 1872 and then shortened to Beaver College in 1907. In 1925, the college moved east to Jenkintown, where it could accommodate more students in larger facilities. In 1929, the college acquired an estate in Glenside and established a second campus there. The Jenkintown campus closed in the mid-1960’s, and its programs moved to Glenside. In 1972, the college began to admit men. In 2001, the school attained university status and changed its name to Arcadia University. Arcadia athletic teams are called the Scarlet Knights.
