Cardinal Stritch University is a private institution of higher learning in Milwaukee. It is administered by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Assisi, a Roman Catholic religious order of women. The institution was established in 1937 as St. Clare College for women. In 1946, the sisters changed the college’s name to Cardinal Stritch College in honor of Cardinal Samuel Stritch, a former archbishop of Milwaukee who had worked closely with the order. In 1970, the college began to admit men. The school changed its name to Cardinal Stritch University in 1997. The university’s athletic teams are called the Crusaders.
