Centenary College of Louisiana is a private institution of higher learning in Shreveport, Louisiana. The college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
Centenary College of Louisiana traces its origin to two institutions, one in Louisiana and one in Mississippi. In 1825, the state of Louisiana established the College of Louisiana for men in Jackson. The Methodist conference of Louisiana and Mississippi established Centenary College in Clinton, Mississippi, in 1839. The founders named it Centenary in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Methodist Societies in England. In 1845, Centenary purchased the College of Louisiana, and the combined college remained in Jackson under the name Centenary College of Louisiana. In 1895, it began to admit women. The college moved to Shreveport in 1908. The college’s athletic men’s teams are called the Gents, and women’s teams are the Ladies.
