Oakland University

Oakland University is a public university in Rochester, Michigan, in Oakland County, near Detroit. The institution was founded in 1957. The school is on the estate of John and Matilda Dodge. John Dodge was a pioneer in automobile manufacturing. His widow, Matilda, left their estate to Michigan State University. The school opened in 1959 and was called Michigan State University-Oakland. The school’s name was changed to Oakland University in 1963. The university awards bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees. Oakland University is home to several research centers, including the Eye Research Institute. The university’s athletic teams are called the Golden Grizzlies.
