All the President’s Men

All the President’s Men is a documentary-style motion picture that follows two reporters as they uncover criminal government activities that led to the Watergate political scandal. The Watergate scandal was one of the biggest political scandals in United States history. The film was nominated for an Academy Award as best picture of the year and led all American movies of 1976 in box-office earnings.

All the President’s Men was released in 1976 and was based on a best-selling 1974 book by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. They were two reporters for The Washington Post whose investigation led to the eventual resignation of President Richard M. Nixon and the conviction of several high government officials on criminal charges. See Watergate .

In the film, Dustin Hoffman plays Carl Bernstein and Robert Redford plays Bob Woodward. The movie becomes a tense political thriller. It also authentically describes the workings of a big city newspaper and the techniques of investigative reporting.

Jason Robards won an Academy Award as best supporting actor for his performance as Washington Post executive editor Ben Bradlee. Hal Holbrook plays the government insider known as “Deep Throat” who provides the reporters with crucial information during their investigation. Other supporting actors include Jane Alexander, Martin Balsam, Meredith Baxter, and Jack Warden. The film was directed by Alan J. Pakula.
