Way Out West is one of the best feature motion pictures made by the comedy team of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The movie was released in 1937 and has been acclaimed as one of the finest screen comedies of the 1930’s. It has also won praise as a delightful satire of Western motion pictures.
In Way Out West, Laurel and Hardy travel to the Western town of Brushwood Gulch to deliver a gold mine deed to the daughter of their prospector friend, who has died. In the town, the two battle a local villain, who attempts to steal the deed. Laurel and Hardy perform their usual characters, with Hardy the blustering know-it-all and Laurel his confused, simple friend.
Way Out West runs only 65 minutes, but it is filled with brilliantly conceived comic sequences. Laurel and Hardy even sing two songs. James Finlayson, the opponent in many Laurel and Hardy comedies, plays the villain. Sharon Lynne plays the dead prospector’s sweet young daughter. James W. Horne directed the film.
