Gelada

Gelada << JEHL uh duh >> is a large African monkey that resembles a baboon. A male gelada weighs about 45 pounds (20 kilograms), while the female weighs around 30 pounds (14 kilograms). Long brownish fur covers much of the animal’s body. On the breast, however, a ring of white fur surrounds an area of naked red skin. The gelada has a black face with lighter eyelids and large canine teeth. The male also possesses a mane of long fur.

Geladas inhabit the treeless mountain terrain of central and northern Ethiopia. They live and sleep on cliffs to avoid predators, but they forage in lower meadows for food during the day. Geladas feed almost exclusively on the seeds of grasses, though they will also eat fruits, nuts, or other vegetation if available.

Gelada groups consist of over 600 individuals. Within these groups are two main types of smaller groups. One type consists of about 8 to 10 male members. The other kind generally has one adult male and several closely bonded females and their young.

Geladas have become a threatened species due to human poaching and habitat destruction. Aside from people, the leopard probably ranks as the gelada’s major predator.
