Horseradish tree is a flowering tree that gets its name from its roots, which smell and taste like horseradish. The tree is native to India, but people cultivate it in warm regions around the world.
The horseradish tree grows about 25 feet (8 meters) tall and has fernlike leaves about 2 feet (60 centimeters) long. Its white flowers grow in clusters, and its long, narrow seed pods contain a single row of triangular seeds. Traditionally, people have used the tree’s roots to make a spicy relish that tastes similar to horseradish. Eating this relish, however, may prove dangerous to some people because the roots contain potentially poisonous chemicals called alkaloids. The pods provide a rich source of vitamin C and are an ingredient in Indian stewlike dishes called curries. People also cook and eat the tree’s flowers, leaves, seeds, and shoots. Oil from the seeds is used in such products as perfume, salad oil, and soap.
