Central Michigan University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. It was founded in 1892 as Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute. Its name was shortened in 1895 to Central Michigan Normal School. The school became Central State Teachers College in 1927 and then Central Michigan College of Education in 1941. As the college broadened its program offerings, it was renamed Central Michigan College in 1955 and then Central Michigan University in 1959. The university athletic teams are called the Chippewas.
