Central Oklahoma, University of, is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Edmond, Oklahoma. It was established in 1890 as the Normal School of the Territory of Oklahoma. After Oklahoma became a state in 1907, the school’s name was changed to Central State Normal School. The institution became Central State Teachers College in 1919. As its curriculum broadened, the college was renamed Central State College in 1933. In 1971, the name was changed to Central State University. It became the University of Central Oklahoma in 1990. The university’s athletic teams are called the Bronchos.
